How I became

It all started on that faitfull Saturday afternoon.

The salesman at then the only bike shop in Windhoek, Velowerkstatt, had told my dad about this...dual slalom that was held. Me and my sister both had bikes, me cause riding was my afternoon activity and transport to soccer training and Carmen just had one, like every kid.

It was 1996. My sister and I had to dice each other down the jeep track. The other competitors were all older...and crazier.

What followed was that same crazy aspiration of going down a hill fast, with the least amount of effort. Little did I know that this was going to be the building block for good bike skill and handling for later on.

Three years of adrenalin in my veins, and fear in my mom's, led me to cross country racing. Downhilling was still my number one, but I saw that fitness plays a important yet small roll to go faster. Training? to go downhill? Ha! But I still took that development road bike and rode 100km on my first training ride on a road bike. I was broken. But not dead!

Starting to win in the series races back home, I was selected to ride for Namibia at the 2001 Africa champs in Sabie, South Africa. Causing a stir-up and leading the Junior race in the first 2 laps, I was passed by SA's big star to finish the race in second place. It was extatic.

And yet I loved the downhilling more. But I was forced to choose in 2002 when I was selected to ride the Erik van Enter. Coach Hella Rust and Tokkie Bombosch lay it down: Either you come to your senses, or you stay home! A good thing that I was told that XC racing had more future in SA, otherwise I would have not been where I am I think.
